Siesta Key After The Storms

A Resilent Paradise

Siesta Key has experienced two hurricanes in less than a month. Despite heavy rains, strong winds, and a storm surge larger than the island has ever seen, Siesta Key proves once again how resilient it is.

Siesta Key

Hurricane Helene

The first hurricane to effect Siesta Key in 2024, Helene brought recording breaking storm surge to the island. Some areas of the island saw up to seven feet to water. Forced to deal with unprecedented water damage, residents and business owners began to repair their properties just in time for the unfortunate arrival of Milton.

Hurricane Milton

The first storm in anyone's living memory to make direct landfall over siesta key, record breaking Hurricane Milton impacted the island less than two weeks after Helene. Milton brought in more sea water, heavy rain, and sustained wind speeds of 120 MPH. Despite the unprecedented event, locals remain positive about the condition of the island.

Midnight Pass, the small water pass that connects the island's Sarasota Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, had been manually closed 40 years ago. During the storm surge, the pass was reopened, allowing the island to drain even as the storm made impact. Many homes and most of the Siesta Key Village were saved thanks to reopening of Midnight Pass, much to the surprise and joy of the locals. Now, residents are working hard to continue their restoration efforts and bring the island back to the paradise they know and love.

Repairing the Island

Residents were allowed to return to the island the following day after Milton's impact. All other foot traffic was prohibited until later in the week. Dependent on tourism, businesses that can, have already begun reopening their doors. Debris is being cleared and locals are working together to restore their community.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently traveled to Siesta Key to tour the island and get an understanding of what the community needs. Beachside Management's owner, Michael Holderness, had the opportunity to speak with the governor and address the island's needs. Holderness has been  a strong advocate for Siesta Key's Recovery, speaking with officials and offering support where able.

The quicker we're back in business, the quicker tourism development tax can go back to the locals and the state. Very important we all work together for the common goal and work at the speed of business not the speed of government.

When it comes to disasters, Governor DeSantis really knows how to get ahead of disasters and work for the people.
